The turn off Kloof Nek, the parking on Signal Hill Road, what the bus and ride options can do, and how a guided hike changes the question altogether.

Main facts
Everything starts with Kloof Nek. Cape Town Tourism's directions are simple: from the Cape Town CBD you drive up Kloof Nek towards Table Mountain.5 At the top you see Camps Bay ahead, Table Mountain on your left and Signal Hill on your right.6 Then you turn right toward Signal Hill and park your car where indicated, and you are able to access the trail up Lion's Head from there.1 If you are asking how to get to Lion's Head for the first time, that is the whole answer.
The map on this page shows the same approach. The Kloof Nek pin sits at the junction, the car park pin is further along toward Signal Hill, and the summit pin shows how close the two are on the ground. Cape Town Tourism lists the location of the Lion's Head hike as Signal Hill Rd, and the price as free.2 Another article says the hike starts just off Signal Hill Road.7 If you are unsure where to start the Lion's Head hike, use the road name in a navigation app, and let the app finish the last kilometre for you.
Allow for the traffic and for the road itself. The walk starts past a security boom and then up a pebbled jeep track.8 Slow down when you see it and follow the signs. In South Africa people drive on the left-hand side of the road, and rental cars are generally right-hand drive, so take extra care if you are not used to it.9 Hire cars with automatic gearboxes make the first hill start easier, and a passenger who reads the map helps a lot on the narrow bends.

Where to park for the Lion's Head hike comes down to a short instruction with no count of spaces attached. Park where indicated, the directions say, and that means using the marked areas rather than stopping at a random verge.1 Cape Town Tourism lists the hike as free and states no parking fee, so read the signs when you arrive, and carry small change in case a car guard asks for a tip. Lock the car, take your valuables with you and note where you parked before the light goes.
Cape Town Tourism says tipping car guards outside of the city centre is acceptable, usually at your discretion, and advises carrying loose change and smaller notes.11,12 Cards are widely accepted in the city, but it is wise to carry a small amount of cash for small purchases and tips.13 A few coins in the car are a better plan than hunting for an ATM at the foot of a mountain, and small notes are easier to hand over than a large one.
Think about when you arrive. Cape Town Tourism's sunset article says of nearby Signal Hill that the visit is free and that you should arrive early to secure your spot.14 The sunset crowd shares the same road, and Lion's Head is one of the places that article lists for sunsets.15 If you are planning a sunset or full moon climb, aim to be parked well before the light starts to go, and leave the car with nothing visible inside.
Who has been before you
Each bar is the number of reviews on a guided Lion's Head listing, as shown in the listing record.
Public transport can get you near, though not all the way. The MyCiTi bus is a convenient way to travel around many parts of the city, particularly between the city centre and popular surrounding areas.17 Its Table Mountain route page tells riders to take the bus to the Kloof Nek stop and transfer to the Table Mountain 110 service for the Lower Cableway.3 Kloof Nek is also where the drive in turns toward Signal Hill, and on the map its pin sits at the junction.
Check the live MyCiTi timetable or the MyCiTi app before you rely on a transfer, and plan a fallback in case the connection does not run when you need it. From the Kloof Nek stop to the trailhead, the road turns toward Signal Hill, and you should use the map pins to judge the distance. Walkers should be comfortable on a road with traffic, and it is not a place for headphones or small children without close supervision.
Rideshare is the simplest choice for people without a car. Uber and other e-hailing services are widely used and offer a convenient alternative if you prefer not to drive or use public transport.4 Put the pin for the car park or the Signal Hill Rd address into the app, agree a pick-up point for the return and note that a mountain road may have patchy phone signal. A pre-booked return is better than counting on a driver being nearby at the end of a long evening.

Guided listings solve the parking and the pickup in one go, in different ways. The site tour's listing says its meeting point varies with the option booked, and that pickup from accommodation can be chosen. The listing shows pickup as available, with the details to be checked on the booking page, and it is listed at 2.5 - 3.5 hours with free cancellation up to 24 hours before for a full refund.
Other listings name the trailhead. One gives the meeting point as the start of the Lion's Head trail at 5 Signal Hill Rd, next to a cafe van, with a group limited to 8. Another gives the start of the trail at 5 Signal Hill Road. A further listing places the meeting point at the Lion's Head car park on Signal Hill road next to the coffee truck, afternoon only. The same address appears across different listings, and it matches the trailhead pin on the map.
Which is better depends on how you travel. A trailhead meeting point suits people with a car or a ride, and a pickup suits people who would rather not think about parking at all. Prices are from prices and change with the date and group size, so read the live listing before you decide. The comparison further down lists four guided options with their starting prices and review counts to help you choose.

Open the trail panel first. It puts the car park, Kloof Nek and the summit on one screen, and the closed Wally's Cave is marked as a warning: it is closed to the public and not a path sanctioned by SANParks.19 The city panel adds Signal Hill, Camps Bay and the Table Mountain stations so you can see the area your drive passes through. Zoom in on the junction before you leave your hotel.
Another use for the map is to pick a plan B. If the Lion's Head car park is full or the weather is poor, the Pipe Track starts at the corner of Tafelberg Road and Kloof Nek, and hikers park at Kloof Nek.16 Platteklip Gorge and Kasteelspoort have their own pins on the city panel for days when you would rather do a different walk. Having a spare option in your pocket stops a failed parking attempt from ending the day.
Last, use the map to plan the return. After a sunset hike you walk down in the twilight and then drive or ride away, and the trek down after sunset can get chilly.10 Have your lift or your car keys ready, keep a layer in the car, and agree where the group will meet if anyone gets separated. The car park is a better meeting point than the summit, and a message to a friend when you reach it closes the loop.

Arrival
Cape Town Tourism says travellers should remain vigilant of their surroundings on hikes, because of reports of criminal activity in and around Table Mountain and its national parks.27 That is a reason to park in marked areas, avoid leaving valuables in the car and walk in a group. Never hike alone, and make sure there are at least 4 hikers.26 Keep a phone charged for the walk back.28
If something goes wrong on the mountain, the cableway company gives 086 110 6417 as the Table Mountain emergency number.25 Save it before you leave the hotel and show it to everyone in the group. A group that has agreed a meeting point, a turn-back time and a driver who stays sober has done most of what a safety plan needs. Tell somebody where you are going, and send a message when you are back at the car.
Finally, think about the weather before you drive. The weather can change very quickly, regardless of the season, and the advice is to check it the day before and the morning of the hike.29,24 A clear day at sea level can still have cloud on the summit. If the forecast is poor, move the walk to another day and spend the morning somewhere else. Lion's Head will still be there tomorrow, and the view from the top is better without cloud in the way.
