Sunset 20:00, dusk ends 20:29. The guided sunset option sets off about 2 hours before sunset, around 18:00.1,8

Day length and sunset are worked out for the 15th of each month on South African time. Dusk is the end of civil twilight, from the US Naval Observatory for Lion's Head in 2027; the start time is the listing's 2 hours before sunset, and a real booking can differ because the start follows the sun. No weather station is close enough to the summit, so the chart shows no temperatures.

Sunset is the most popular way to see the mountain, and the hardest part is the way down. See sunset and dusk times for the year, how a guided outing is paced and the official advice.

Why sunset suits this mountain

Lion's Head faces the open Atlantic, and the climb is short enough to fit into the late afternoon. What visitors look for as a Lion's Head Cape Town sunset is really two things, the climb and the colours. Cape Town Tourism says the mountain provides some of the most stunning sunsets in the city, and SANParks lists the view from the summit as a sweep over the Atlantic seaboard from Oudekraal through Camps Bay and Clifton to Sea Point and Green Point, as well as Table Bay and Robben Island.2,4

The climb itself is the same easy route that the park rates easy with some minor rock scrambling, about 2 km one-way and 1 to 1.5 hours up.5 What changes at sunset is the setting: you climb with warm light behind you, you stand on the top for the colours, and you come down with the city lights starting below. The route has a steel ladder, a chain handrail and an optional chain ladder near the top, with a bypass on the south-east ridge.6

Cape Town Tourism calls a hike at sunrise, sunset or under a full moon an unforgettable experience, even in winter.7 Sunset is the easiest of the three to fit around a day: you can spend the morning elsewhere, climb after lunch and still be at the table for dinner. Expect to share the view, since the summit is open to everyone.

US Naval Observatory times for Lion's Head in 2027, local time; dusk ends when civil twilight ends.1,8

Sunset and dusk times, month by month

The sun sets earliest in June and latest in January. The US Naval Observatory gives sunset at Lion's Head at 17:44 on 15 June and at 20:00 on 15 January, with civil twilight, the dusk after the sun has gone, ending at 18:12 and 20:29 on those dates.1,8 In March and in October the sun goes down at 19:05 and 19:00, close to the middle of the yearly range.1

The table below lists sunset and the end of civil twilight for every month, as the observatory publishes them for 2027. Use the end-of-twilight column as the point at which the light on the trail is effectively gone, and plan to be well down the steep part before it.8 The gap between sunset and the end of civil twilight is about half an hour in every month, so the light fades quickly, which is why a torch matters.

Winter is the tightest season. A sunset at 17:44 in June means a start in the early afternoon and an early finish, and a cold descent.1 In summer the late sunset gives you a long evening, but the same descent in twilight still needs a light. The seasons change the clock time and the clothes, not the shape of the outing.

How a guided sunset outing runs

The guided listing on this site describes the sunset hike on Lion's Head in outline. The group starts about 2 hours before sunset, reaches the summit about 1 hour before sunset, then drops to a lower and less crowded section to watch the sun go down, and walks down in the twilight with flashlights supplied when required. That order gives you daylight for the steep, rocky part of the climb and a settled place for the sunset itself.

The start time follows the sunset time for your date, so it can differ from the time first booked, and the group needs to keep a steady pace to reach the summit on time. Check the confirmation for the real meeting time. The meeting point depends on the option booked, or you can choose a pickup from your accommodation.

Other guided listings follow similar lines. One offers Lion's Head at sunrise or sunset for groups limited to 8 people, and another is a sunset hike for groups limited to 7. Group size, pickup and price differ between them, and each listing's page lists its own cancellation terms, so compare before you book.

What to do about the dark

Pick the row that sounds like your plan and see the advice.

Bring a headlamp and a group

SANParks recommends groups of four or more and lists a headlamp.9,10

    Start earlier in the day

The City of Cape Town says to finish a hike before sunset.3

  • If I feel unsure on the chains

    Book a guided sunset

The listing supplies flashlights and walks down in the twilight.

  • If It is June and I have little time

    Start in the early afternoon

Sunset on the 15th of June is early, at 17:44, so the afternoon is short.1

  • If I am afraid of the cold

    Pack a warm layer

The trek down after sunset can get chilly.2

The descent in twilight and the dark

The way down is where the risk sits. SANParks warns that alcohol, darkness and the initial steep descent can be a very dangerous combination on full-moon nights, and it records several accidents, at least one of them fatal.12 Sunset is not a full moon, but the lesson carries: the steep section just below the summit is where a hiker without a light is most likely to slip.

Official advice leans cautious. SANParks asks walkers to hike in daylight hours only, and the City of Cape Town says never to hike in the dark and to allow enough time to finish before sunset.13,3 A guided sunset outing is arranged around that tension, with a daylight climb, a summit before the sun goes down and flashlights supplied when required for the twilight walk.

Carry your own light and keep it accessible. SANParks lists a torch or headlamp among the items everyone should bring when walking outside at night, along with a hat, sun block, water and wet weather gear.10 Put on a warm layer at the summit before you start down, because Cape Town Tourism says the trek down after sunset can get chilly.2

Hiking at sunset without a guide

Self-guided hikers should follow the park's advice closely. SANParks recommends groups of four or more for activities in the park, says criminals are much more likely to go after individuals than groups, and asks walkers to stay on demarcated paths and not to carry valuables, cash or cameras.9,14,15 The City of Cape Town also says never to walk alone, with groups of at least four recommended.16

Tell someone reliable your route and when you expect to be back, and call if you are running late, as SANParks asks.17 Save the park's emergency number, 0861 106 417, in your phone, and note that the City of Cape Town also lists numbers for emergencies, for Table Mountain National Park and for Wilderness Search and Rescue.11,18 Wesgro adds that full-moon hikes need a good headlamp and a group, and the same sensible kit applies to a sunset climb.19

Parking is another sunset detail. Wesgro says it is best to start early to avoid crowds and the difficulty finding parking along Signal Hill Road, and a sunset start in the afternoon is when that road fills.19 If you are not driving, a ride-share drop saves the search. Either way, keep the walk from the car to the trailhead in your time budget.

Choosing sunset, sunrise or the moon

Sunset suits most plans because it starts in daylight and ends with a view of the city lights. The listing's schedule, with a summit about 1 hour before sunset, is the useful template for a self-guided plan as well. Sunrise asks for an early alarm and a start in the dark, and the sunrise page on this site sets out its times and its kit.

The full-moon hike is a different event. SANParks says it is a Cape Town tradition to hike Lion's Head on the night of a full moon, that the summit can be very busy and that it should be done in groups led by someone with experience.12,20 The night and full-moon page on this site covers that case in its own right.

Whichever you choose, check the date and the forecast. SANParks says the weather on Table Mountain is unpredictable and can change suddenly, with a possible loss of visibility, and the famous tablecloth of cloud pours down the slopes when the south-easter blows.21,22 A cloudy evening is no reason to skip the hike, only a reason to expect a different kind of view.
